As a child (and occasionally as a bored adult), I played with a small, flat, plastic puzzle. It had 15 numbered tiles and one empty space. The object was to slide the tiles around and arrange them in order. I've seen various computer versions of this puzzle--some of them improved on the original: Larger boards, pictures instead of numbers, 'swapping' pieces instead of an empty space, etc.

Newton's Shuffle takes sliding puzzles to a whole new level--actually, a whole new layer. Instead of numbers, the board consists only of circles and half circles--just enough to fill the board when you match them up. Some of the pieces are on layer one (the 'purple' layer), some are on layer two ('yellow'). There are multiple solutions: how layer one is arranged will determine how layer two must be arranged to solve the puzzle.
Another twist: Newton's Shuffle doesn't use the 'empty space' like the old fifteen puzzle, either. There are four different types of controls for manipulating the layers:
- Sliders - Move entire rows or columns left, right, up or down
- Swappers - Swap two side-by-side pieces
- Spinners - 'Rotate' a 2x2 group of pieces clockwise or counter-clockwise
- Criss-Crosses - Swap two diagonal pairs in a 2x2 group
There are 100 different built-in game boards in Beginner, Advanced, and Expert categories. Additionally, there are three skill levels: the normal level will keep you entertain you for a quick game; the difficult level will keep you busy for hours (both layers are the same color), and the highest level (a.k.a. the impossible level) can turn even a 3x3 beginner board into a challenge suitable for the most fanaatic puzzle enthusiast!
